A lovely sunny day in Brighton again!
Just the day for the coffee and cake reunion date at the Mock Turtle Cafe with the writers who met at Sussex Uni in 2009!
We had been promising ourselves to meet up again for ages but somehow it hadn’t happened until now!
What a pity the Uni withdrew the funding for courses involving the wider community! We all learned so much and really got into writing, poetry, short stories and for some, novels.
The courses at the Uni were like the OU in the 60’s, appealing to those who may not had much or any access to further education. I was one of those people who would never have got started in any kind of academic or writing life without the OU and for me the course at the Uni was the icing on the cake!
Today, aided with pots of tea, coffee and yummy cakes, (I think I’ve got cakes on the brain) it was time to swop notes and our wonderful tutor John McCullough came along too, to find out how we had all been getting along and to share his progress with his new poetry book. We all thought he was indeed a very special tutor!
He still teaches on the MA course at the Uni, but luckily ordinary mortals can still benefit from his tuition because he does short courses including one for New Writing South.
Ok so none of us have had any full length novels published yet, but some of us have entered competitions and we are all still busy writing!
Thanks to Catriona (right) for arranging it all, and to the lovely ‘Mock Turtle’ for their lovely food and attentive service!
The group’s last reunion was in 2010.
Sorry some missed it, better luck next time.
