Two down – three to go – Pigbaby at Redroaster

John Davies the director of Pighog compered tonight.

1-DSC03238Lee Harwood, Ciaran O’Driscoll and Philip Pollecoff, each poet reading both in the first and second half.

Lee Harwood is widely regarded as one of the finest poets working in 1-DSC03247England today. He has published over 20 volumes of poetry and prose and was mainly reading from these, but also read several new works. One of his poems with the repeated line ‘She climbed out of the tree a Queen’, was such a clever devise based on the Queen’s visit to Kenya in 1953, it had so many personal and historical touches. He told of his father who, during the war, had to shoot a seriously wounded comrade and who never got over it. This certainly brought tears to the eyes of many.

1-DSC03249Ciaran O’Driscoll celebrating his 70th year had the audience in the palm of his hand as usual.  I loved his poem ‘Bisho’ really a poem of November ‘once upon a lifetime’ what a great line that is,  ‘the hedges dressed as harlequins.’

1-DSC03244‘Wry and surprising,’ is how Philip Pollecoff is described. He was very funny, with several  poems ‘Max’ was about the differences between Zero, and Diet coke, ‘Love Variations on Driving to Work’ which he blames on the style of Frank O’Hara.
